4 DevOps principles you need to know

If you’re new to DevOps, it’s important to know that there are several incontrovertible principles that underpin the philosophy. They include automation, iteration, continuous monitoring and improvement, and collaboration.

Key DevOps Principles

Let’s take a closer look at these principles, which form a comprehensive, fundamental doctrine upon which you should build your DevOps processes.

Automation

When you apply DevOps methodologies, you automate as much as possible in the development lifecycle. Automation makes your release management process more efficient, as it requires a minimal amount of manual labor and drastically reduces the number of errors you have to deal with.

To implement DevOps, adopt agile practices like continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), version control, automated testing, and automated deployment. By doing so, you can build, test, and release faster.

Iteration

Instead of working on several large releases per year, divide projects up into bite-sized chunks called sprints. This enables you to release small changes faster and more frequently in what’s known as continuous deployment.

It also makes you more agile, as small releases are easier to oversee and adjust when needed. This in turn improves the security and quality of your changes.

Continuous Monitoring and Improvement

Continuously test, monitor, and improve. You should also make incorporating feedback from end users a part of your process.

This continuous improvement will consistently and incrementally enhance the quality and usefulness of your changes. It will also allow you to optimize performance, cost, and time to delivery.

Collaboration

Break down silos between the development and RevOps teams to foster a collaborative environment. Team members need to be able to discuss their projects, ask questions, and share solutions to enhance the quality of the product.

Prodly allows RevOps teams to deploy changes without the use of code. As such, it’s specifically designed to promote collaboration between programmatic developers and low-code/no-code developers like admins.

DevOps Principles Require a Cultural Shift

Implementing DevOps requires you to start thinking differently about how you make changes, fix bugs, and build new features and apps. DevOps culture is one of speed, agility, and collaboration that empowers you and your team to work more efficiently, solve problems more effectively, and deliver better results faster.
